Need Stress Relief? Try Playdough

While playing with playdough with my little friend A, she asked to get the blue dough back from her sister. The trouble was, as often is with playdough... the colors were too blended together to separate them out again. Of course, this made me wax philosophical about the state of our nation. We are one, United States. Our reds and blues are too blended together to be separated. We must find a way to communicate with each other and transcend the either/or viewpoint with a both/and viewpoint. I'm not sure how we'll be able to do it. I only know that we must.

In the meantime, here's my favorite recipe for homemade playdough. It's easy, inexpensive and I'm telling you, mushing it around is one of the most soothing things to do when you're at the end of your rope. Try it! You'll like it.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 cup water
  • food coloring
I toss all the dry ingredients into a small saucepan. Measure the water add oil and food coloring and then add to dry ingredients. Stir and cook over low to medium heat until dough starts to form and becomes dry. When it gets too tough to stir, scrape it from the pan and knead for a few minutes to soften it up.
